Belém & The Amazon Delta

In the state of the Pará, at the mouth of the mighty Amazon River lies Marajó, the largest fluvial island in the world.  Belém to the south is the state capital and the gateway for a varied wildlife destination as well as an architectural and cultural gem in its own right.  The city is full of wide streets, lined with colonial buildings in a wonderful and quite Brazilian mixture of styles.

The Forte do Castélo is a reminder of the city's military history and also houses a small collection of Marajuara pottery made by pre-columbian civilisations living in the Amazon Delta. Pottery is still a big part of life in Belém and reproductions of the indigenous style make excellent souvenirs.

The food from Pará is a unique blend of exotic flavours, countless varieties of little known fruits and seemingly limitless quantities of enormous river fish mean that the diet is healthy, interesting and delicious. Ice cream made from Amazon fruit is sold all over the city
